A product company may still call someone a Business Analyst even when they own a product area and work directly with product and engineering teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see this in current job descriptions from different companies. At IBM, Business Analyst roles can involve gathering and analysing requirements, defining current and future processes, working with stakeholders and supporting implementation. An SDE-2 at one company may not have the same scope as an SDE-2 somewhere else. If you have been thinking about this, then there are actually various options that you can consider: Product Management, Data Analytics, Product Ownership, Functional Consulting, or BA management. Your BA experience gives you a strong base, but each path builds on it differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you consider these options, look at what you will need to add to your current skill set. Some paths build closely on your BA experience, while others require you to develop new technical, product, domain, or leadership skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. BA to Product Manager<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a sales team for a new dashboard because 20 clients have requested it. As a Business Analyst, you may speak to the sales team, find out what they need, write the requirements, and work with the development team to make sure the feature is built correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Product Manager, you would have to decide whether those 20 requests are enough reason to spend three weeks of engineering time on the dashboard. You may find that another feature could reduce customer drop-offs by 10%, so that gets priority instead. You may also decide to build a smaller version of the dashboard first and see whether customers actually use it before putting more engineering time into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, your BA experience can come of use if you want to switch from business analyst to product manager. You already know how to work with stakeholders, ask questions when a requirement is unclear, understand business processes, and turn a business problem into something the team can work on. The part you need to add is the decision-making that comes before and after the requirements. You need to be able to choose between competing requests, decide what should be built first, set a metric for the feature, and check the numbers after it goes live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why a Senior BA does not always move directly into a Senior PM role. If you have 7 years of BA experience but most of that work involved requirements, stakeholder coordination, and delivery, a company may still hire you as an APM or PM. If a client asks your team to build a payment feature, the client may decide that the feature is a priority. You can spend weeks understanding the requirement, writing user stories, and helping the team deliver it, but you may never get to decide whether the payment feature should come before the other work. In a product company, that decision is more likely to sit with the product team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So before you apply for PM roles, look at the work you are doing now. BA to Data Analyst \/ Analytics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your BA experience can already put you close to analytics if your work involves reports, KPIs, dashboards, or regular analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main difference is usually on the technical side. You need to be able to get the data yourself, work out whether it is usable, and analyse it before presenting an answer. That means writing SQL queries, joining tables, cleaning missing or duplicate records, using basic statistics and working with tools such as Excel and Power BI. Especially knowing Python is essential here when you need to automate repeated analysis or work with larger datasets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then, the business knowledge you have as a BA won\u2019t really go to waste. If a dashboard shows that conversion fell from 8% to 5%, you need to know what that number means for the business and which parts of the process need to be investigated. You also need to be able to explain the finding to someone who does not work with data every day. A technically correct report is not very useful if it does not answer the question the business actually has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing that you should keep in mind is that your years of BA experience will not automatically count as years of analytics experience. Someone with 5 years in BA and no SQL or reporting work will probably need to enter at a different level from someone with 5 years of BA experience that included SQL, dashboards, monthly reporting, and regular data analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s why you may end up in a different career track while switching. From Data Analyst, you could move into Senior Data Analyst, Product Analyst, Business Intelligence, or Analytics Manager roles. BA to Product Owner \/ Scrum-side roles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of Product Owner work may already be familiar to you as a Business Analyst. User stories, backlog refinement, developer discussions, and stakeholder meetings are common in both roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, this title can still mean very different things from one company to another. In one role, you may decide what goes into the next release and change the order of the backlog when priorities change. In another, you may write user stories and keep the backlog updated while the Product Manager, client, or senior manager makes those decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you take a PO role, you should first check what you will actually be responsible for. Will you decide what the team works on first? Can you change the backlog when priorities change? Can you say no when a stakeholder asks for something that should not be built? If the answer is yes, then you will be getting a proper Product Owner experience. If someone else makes those decisions and you mainly write user stories and update the backlog, the new title may not change your work much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrumalliance.org\/get-certified\/product-owner-track\/certified-scrum-product-owner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSPO<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrum.org\/assessments\/professional-scrum-product-owner-i-certification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PSPO<\/a> certification can help you get through a job requirement, but it will not prove that you can do the job. You still need to show that you have made these decisions at work, handled different stakeholder requests, and decided what the team should work on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. BA to Domain \/ Functional Consultant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can take your BA experience into a specific system or industry instead of continuing to work across different types of projects. SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, BFSI, healthcare, and supply chain are some examples. You would still work with requirements and stakeholders, but you would also need to know the system or domain well enough to tell the client how a business process can be handled in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take SAP as an example. If you work as a functional consultant for procurement, you need to understand how a company handles purchasing as well as how that process works in SAP. You are not just collecting the requirements from the business team; you are expected to know what can be done in the system and help decide the right way to set it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you need to keep in mind that having domain knowledge alone does not guarantee a higher salary. <a href=\"https:\/\/in.indeed.com\/career\/sap-consultant\/salaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indeed<\/a> currently reports an average salary of \u20b97,99,408 a year for SAP Consultants in India, based on 224 reported salaries and updated in August 2026. It puts the reported salary range at \u20b94,20,000+ to \u20b915,05,000+, depending on factors such as experience, location, and employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, there is a trade-off you should know about. You may have to travel to client locations, work towards fixed implementation deadlines, or spend several years working with the same platform. If most of your experience is in SAP, employers will start looking for you specifically for your SAP knowledge. You may have more opportunities in SAP, but moving back to a general BA role later can be harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to specialise, choose an area where you are willing to build both sides of the skill set: how the business works and how the system supports it. That is what can take you from a functional consultant to more senior consulting and transformation roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. BA to BA Manager \/ Practice Lead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 6-8 years as a BA, your next role does not have to be outside Business Analysis. You can move into a BA Manager or Practice Lead position and take responsibility for other BAs instead of taking on larger and more complex requirements work yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, instead of working solely with a stakeholder mapping a new process, you may now start reviewing the work of four BAs throughout different projects. You could be deciding which BA should join a new project, interviewing a candidate for an open position, checking whether requirements meet the team's standards, or speaking to a delivery head who needs another analyst for an upcoming project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as your team grows, you\u2019ll better understand the changes in the role itself. If you manage 10 BAs across five projects, you are not expected to solve the requirements problems on all five projects yourself. You need to know whether the right people are assigned to each project, whether the work is meeting the expected standard, and where an analyst needs help. You may step into a difficult stakeholder discussion, but you are doing it because the team needs your support, not because you own that project's requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you want to remain close to hands-on Business Analysis, a senior BA or specialist role may suit you better. If you are ready to spend more of your time reviewing other people's work, developing BAs, and managing several projects through your team, BA Manager or Practice Lead would be a good position to move forward to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-actually-gets-a-business-analyst-promoted\"><\/span><strong>What Actually Gets a Business Analyst Promoted<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what can you actually do to step up on your business analyst promotion path? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by looking at the work sitting right in front of you. A promotion is much easier to argue for when you have already taken on some of the work that comes with the next role. That could mean leading a difficult requirements discussion, taking charge of a workstream that involves three teams, presenting your findings to a business head, or becoming the person people call when a process is not working as it should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also want something better than \u201cI worked on 7 projects\u201d when the time comes to talk about your progress. Always keep the result of the work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you changed a claims process from six approval steps to three, write it down. If the change brought processing time down from 4.2 days to 2.8 days, keep that number. If you removed 18 hours of manual work every week, record it. If you helped reduce 1,200 support tickets in a quarter, save the report that shows it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numbers do not have to be huge. They should simply make it easier for your manager, or a recruiter, to understand what your work actually changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same goes for the documents you create. A BRD sitting in a project folder is just a BRD. A process map that helped three teams agree on a new workflow is something you can talk about in an interview. A dashboard that helped a business team spot a problem and decide what to do next is much more useful than one that was created because someone asked for a dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there is the part that many people leave until appraisal week: asking what it would take to move up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can ask your manager directly: \u201cWhat would you need to see from me over the next six months to support my promotion?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they say you need to lead a workstream, work directly with senior stakeholders or take responsibility for a business metric, you now know what to look for in your next project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will also help if you are planning to move companies. The tools are changing, and that also makes people think, \u201cIs business analyst a dying career?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s see how AI is really impacting the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are AI Business Analyst roles that ask for M365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Dataiku and LibreChat, along with AI\/ML concepts, basic SQL, data quality and AI use-case framing. The role also involves defining requirements, testing AI solutions and helping take them into production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you will also find a 4-6 year Associate Business Analyst role that asks for the usual BA work, i.e, BRDs, FRDs, user stories and Agile, but also lists AI\/ML requirements and prompt engineering. NASSCOM's 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/community.nasscom.in\/communities\/nasscom-insights\/work-reimagined-rise-human-ai-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Work Reimagined report<\/a> estimates that 20-40% of work across Indian technology organisations is now being done through AI, but more than 55% of respondents reported incomplete or low-quality AI outputs. More than 95% of organisations surveyed are also using or planning to use AI agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a Business Analyst, this means you will be heavily responsible for cross-checking your work all the time. If AI writes a requirement, check whether it understood the business rule. If it generates a SQL query, run it and check what data it is actually using. If it suggests an AI solution, ask whether the problem needs AI at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you are preparing for a BA role now, you do not need to stop learning BA fundamentals and start over with AI. Use AI while you learn the work. Give it a requirement and see what it misses. Ask it to write acceptance criteria and check them yourself.
