I am a firm believer in the quote, “6 months of hard work and focus can put you years ahead in your life”.
So much so that to be honest, my mantra in life has always been to never underestimate the power of consistency and desire. I am Husain Shoab from Kolkata and I am currently working as a Software Developer at Amazon. I wouldn’t have been able to work at my dream company ever, had I not taken the vow to be disciplined and to work hard for what I really wanted.
I’ve always been a self-motivated individual. Perhaps, this is why my parents have always been supportive of how I’ve led my life. They have undoubtedly been the sole reason behind my ambitious nature. Growing up, I had seen my parents struggle financially. However despite all of that, they made sure I had the best of the education available: he sent me to the most prestigious of schools and colleges, which only made me want to work harder to achieve my best!
I first encountered the world of Computer Sciences in the tenth grade. It was an options class that I had taken, but I performed poorly there almost throughout the year. My teacher, who was very close to me at that time, advised me not to pursue it any further and choose another subject for the remainder of my school life.
I felt a little disheartened because I wanted to code. I was put in a position where I was forced to doubt myself and my abilities. Nevertheless, I took it as a challenge and spent a lot of time studying and improving my coding skills. In the final exams, I topped the class and left everyone, including myself, speechless.
College was a journey. I was distracted and didn’t do any relevant internships needed to keep growing in my career. So, after my graduation, I ended up in Tata Consultancy Services as a System Administrator with little work experience and even lesser will to do better. I knew I had to be better to do better. And so, I worked hard, toiled for hours and got myself an All India rank of 800 in the Gate Exam, which led me to enrol in BITS, Pilani for my masters.
After that degree, I got placed at Intel where my role was all about system level software and compiler design. I worked there for a year, but again, I learned the hard way that I didn’t belong there as well. I could continue working there but I was ready to grow more and achieve more.
It was through an email that I got to know about Scaler’s e-learning platform. I decided to give it a shot and build my programming skills for the better. I cleared the academy’s exam in my second attempt and got this incredible opportunity to join this tech university in May 2019.
I hesitated because I was concerned about how I was going to pull it off with an internship. But I knew I had to work towards making the time and do both things to the best of my ability. It was with countless hours of hard work, dedication and support from people around me that I was able to qualify for my dream job at Amazon within just four months of joining Scaler. It was definitely challenging, but the journey was just as fun as the destination.
I am already working at my dream company, but in the coming years, I want to explore and work in the different departments of Amazon and slowly work my way up to a leadership position. For anyone looking towards enrolling in the Scaler Academy, just like I tell all of my friends, I’d like to ask you to go for it. It might be hard to do it with working in a full time role, but remember, hard work and consistent efforts always pay off.
