The computer network syllabus decides how well you understand what happens between a click and a loaded page. In Indian B.Tech, BCA, MCA and BSc CS programs, it is a core subject, usually taught in the fifth or sixth semester. It also carries direct marks in GATE CS and comes up often in placement interviews.

This guide breaks down the computer network syllabus for 2026 as it is taught at VTU, Anna University and AKTU. It explains what changed in the GATE 2027 syllabus and gives you a 12-week roadmap with tools and projects to learn computer networks properly.

What Does a Computer Network Syllabus Cover?

Almost every computer network syllabus in India follows the layers of the network stack. The order may change, but the units do not. Here is the standard set of topics, unit by unit.

UnitCore Topics
1. Network fundamentalsNetwork types (LAN, MAN, WAN), topologies, protocols and standards, OSI and TCP/IP models, circuit and packet switching
2. Physical layerGuided and wireless transmission media, signals, encoding, multiplexing, performance and impairments
3. Data link layerFraming, error detection and correction (parity, CRC, checksum), flow control (stop-and-wait, sliding window), MAC (ALOHA, CSMA/CD, CSMA/CA), Ethernet, VLANs, HDLC and PPP
4. Network layerIPv4 and IPv6 addressing, subnetting and CIDR, NAT, ARP, ICMP, DHCP, distance vector and link state routing, RIP, OSPF, BGP, multicast basics
5. Transport layerUDP, TCP connection management, flow control, congestion control, QoS, sockets
6. Application layerHTTP, DNS, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, FTP, SNMP, SSH
7. Security and wirelessCryptography basics, firewalls, wireless LANs (802.11)

Some universities merge the first two units or fold security into the application layer. The topics themselves stay the same.

Computer Network Syllabus at VTU, Anna University and AKTU

The three syllabi below show how the same subject is packaged differently.

UniversityCourse CodeSemester and CreditsUnit OrderLab Work
VTU (2022 scheme)BCS502Sem 5, 4 creditsBottom-up: physical to applicationPoint-to-point links, ping and traceroute, Ethernet LAN with congestion window plots
Anna University (R2021)CS3591Sem 5, 4 credits (3-0-2)Top-down: application to physical30 practical periods, such as ARP/RARP simulation code
AKTUBCS603Sem 6, 4 creditsBottom-up: physical to applicationSeparate Computer Networks Lab (BCS653)

The AICTE model curriculum lists Computer Networks (PCC-CS602) as a core course with 3 lecture hours and 4 practical hours a week. Some BSc IT syllabi go further and ask students to configure RIP, OSPF, DHCP and DNS in Cisco Packet Tracer. If you study one university’s computer network syllabus well, you have covered most of another’s.

Computer Networks Syllabus for GATE 2027: What Changed

GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras, and its official CS syllabus has a much shorter computer networks section than GATE 2026. The 2027 list reads: principles of layering; basics of switching (circuit, packet and virtual circuit) and performance metrics; error detection, Medium Access Control and Ethernet; distance vector and link state routing; IPv4 fragmentation, CIDR notation and NAT; TCP flow control, congestion control and socket API; DNS and HTTP.

TopicGATE 2026 (IIT Guwahati)GATE 2027 (IIT Madras)
LayeringOSI and TCP/IP stacks named“Principles of Layering” only
Data linkFraming, error detection, MAC, Ethernet bridgingError detection, MAC, Ethernet
RoutingShortest path, flooding, distance vector, link stateDistance vector and link state
IP support protocolsARP, DHCP, ICMPNot named
TransportFlow and congestion control, UDP, TCP, socketsTCP flow and congestion control, socket API
ApplicationDNS, SMTP, HTTP, FTP, EmailDNS and HTTP

Keep two cautions in mind. First, a topic that is not named can still appear inside a broader question, so do not drop UDP or ICMP from your semester prep. Second, IIT Madras does not publish marks per subject. GO Classes’ analysis of the official papers counts 8, 9 and 8 computer networks marks out of 100 in GATE CSE 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Modern Topics: What Is in the Syllabus and What Is Still Emerging

Textbooks move faster than university syllabi. The 9th edition of Kurose and Ross (Pearson, 2025) adds Wi-Fi 6, 5G cellular networks, HTTP/3 and QUIC. University core courses have not caught up in the same way.

TopicStatus in 2026 Core Syllabi
Software-defined networking (SDN)Mostly an elective. Anna University runs a separate Software Defined Networks course. Not in VTU BCS502 or GATE 2027
Wireless LAN (802.11)In the core, for example Anna University CS3591 Unit 5
5G and cellular networksEmerging. Covered in new textbooks and electives, not core units
Cloud networking (VPCs, load balancers)Emerging. Taught in cloud and DevOps courses, not the CN core
IoT networkingUsually a separate IoT course, not a CN unit
Network automationEmerging. Part of the CCNA v1.1 “Automation and Programmability” domain, not university core

Learn the core layers first. Then pick one modern topic that fits your target role, such as SDN with Mininet for research or cloud networking for DevOps.

A 12-Week Learning Roadmap for Computer Networks

This plan matches the length of NPTEL’s 12-week Computer Networks and Internet Protocol course from IIT Kharagpur, so you can follow those lectures alongside it. Budget 6 to 8 hours a week.

WeeksFocusHands-On Task
1-2Network basics, OSI and TCP/IP modelsRun ping, traceroute (tracert on Windows) and nslookup on a few sites and note each hop
3-4Physical and data link layers, Ethernet, CRC, switchingBuild a small switched LAN with two VLANs in Cisco Packet Tracer
5-7IPv4, IPv6, subnetting, CIDR, NAT, RIP, OSPF, BGPSolve 20 subnetting problems and configure OSPF across three routers
8-9UDP, TCP, flow and congestion control, socketsWrite a TCP chat app with the socket API in Python or C
10HTTP, DNS, SMTP, DHCPCapture a page load in Wireshark and trace the DNS query, TCP handshake and HTTP request
11-12Security basics, wireless, SDNTry a simple SDN topology in Mininet and solve previous year GATE questions

Wireshark and Packet Tracer cover most student needs. Packet Tracer is free with a Cisco Networking Academy account. GNS3 helps later when you want to emulate real router images, and Mininet is the usual way to try SDN on a laptop.

Pick one main textbook. Kurose and Ross’s Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (9th edition, 2025) starts from applications, which suits developers. Forouzan’s Data Communications and Networking with TCP/IP Protocol Suite (6th edition, 2022) appears in Anna University’s syllabus and follows a bottom-up order close to most Indian exams. Tanenbaum’s Computer Networks and Peterson and Davie’s Computer Networks: A Systems Approach work well as references.

Why Computer Networks Matters for Interviews, GATE and Careers

Campus interviews for software roles often test computer networks through topics such as the TCP handshake, DNS resolution and what happens when you type a URL. GATE 2027 now names the socket API, which rewards students who have written networked code.

The subject also feeds directly into several careers. Network engineers configure routing, switching and firewalls. Backend developers depend on HTTP, TCP and load balancing. DevOps and cloud engineers design VPCs, subnets and DNS records. Security analysts read packet captures every day. If you want the network engineering path, Scaler’s network engineer roadmap lays out the skills and certifications in order.

Interest in the subject is high. The January 2026 NPTEL run of Computer Networks and Internet Protocol had 39,122 learners enrolled.

What Good Computer Networks Notes Should Contain

Good computer networks notes are short, visual and tied to your syllabus. Long copied PDFs rarely help in the last week before an exam. Your notes should include:

  • One page per layer, with its job, key protocols and devices
  • Header diagrams for Ethernet, IPv4, TCP and UDP, with field sizes
  • A formula sheet for transmission delay, propagation delay, stop-and-wait efficiency and throughput
  • Five or six worked subnetting and CIDR problems
  • Comparison tables such as TCP vs UDP, IPv4 vs IPv6, and distance vector vs link state
  • Previous year questions mapped to each unit

To study, read one unit, explain it aloud without notes, then check it in Wireshark or Packet Tracer. Solve numericals every week instead of saving them for the end. Scaler Topics has a free computer network tutorial that walks through each layer, which works well as a base for your own computer networks notes.

How to Choose a Computer Networking Course

A good computer networking course should map to your syllabus and add practice that a classroom cannot. Check for these before you sign up:

  • Coverage of all five layers plus subnetting and routing numericals
  • Labs in Wireshark or Packet Tracer, not only slides
  • Socket programming practice, since GATE 2027 now names the socket API
  • Quizzes or graded challenges after each module
  • A certificate, if you need one for your resume

Scaler’s free computer networking course on Scaler Topics has 6 modules and 85 lessons covering the OSI model, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, DNS, HTTP and network security.

If you plan a network engineering career, a vendor certification adds weight.

Conclusion

At the university level, the computer network syllabus in 2026 looks much as it did a few years ago: five layers, a lab and a steady set of protocols. The bigger change is in GATE 2027, which has narrowed its list and now names the socket API and performance metrics. Learn the layers in order and practise with Wireshark and Packet Tracer every week. Keep your computer networks notes short enough to revise in a day. That base will serve you in semester exams, GATE and your first job.
