Scaler DSML Review | What's Actually Inside the Program

Topics Covered

When you're thinking about joining a program, I think one of the first things you want to know is what you'll actually be doing once you get inside. What does the curriculum look like? How are the classes structured? And what happens beyond just watching lectures?

That's what I wanted to show through my experience with Scaler's Data Science and Machine Learning program. I've been using the platform since joining in 2023, and the experience has been quite structured and practical. The curriculum, classes, assignments, case studies, mock interviews, and mentorship all form part of the learning process, with most of it organised through the dashboard.

Who I am, and where I am in the program

I was born and brought up in Andhra Pradesh, where I also completed my education. I'm currently working as a Functional Data Analyst at TCS in Hyderabad and pursuing the DSML program alongside my work.

I joined Scaler in 2023 and am still pursuing the program. So far, the experience has been very structured and practical. The curriculum starts with the fundamentals and gradually moves towards advanced topics, with assignments, case studies, and mock interviews built into the learning process.

How the curriculum is sequenced

I liked the way the curriculum is structured. It starts with the fundamentals and gradually moves towards more advanced concepts, so there is time to build the understanding before getting into machine learning.

The learning starts with statistics and exploratory data analysis, or EDA, and then moves into machine learning. Real-world case studies are part of the curriculum as well, so we get to work with the concepts through actual problems.

The instructors explain the concepts clearly and connect them to industry problems, which helped me understand how they could be used practically. The live classes are interactive, and there are separate doubt sessions where we can get our questions addressed.

Assignments and case studies also helped me understand the concepts better and work on my problem-solving. Overall, the curriculum has a clear progression from the fundamentals to application, with support at each stage of the learning process.

A look inside the dashboard

The dashboard is organised phase-wise, with different modules listed under Core Skills and Curriculum. When I open a module, I can see all the classes for that topic, including the recorded lectures. There are live classes on alternate days as well, so both the recorded and live sessions are available within the module.

After every class, there is an assignment. After each module, there is also a case study under the Business Case section. The case studies involve real business problems where I work on EDA, feature engineering, model building, and business insights.

The mock interviews are also linked to the modules. After every core module where a mock interview is required, I have to clear it. Some modules are marked “mock interview not required,” so the requirement depends on the module. The mock interviews and mentorship sessions are scheduled directly through the platform as well.

There are a few features that help me keep track of my learning. The platform has a problem-solving streak that tracks how regularly I solve problems, while the home screen shows my attendance and problem-solving percentage.

There is also a Career Hub and Job Insights section on the platform. The Career Hub shows available jobs based on my qualifications, and I can use the resume builder to create a resume according to a particular job requirement.

Everything is centralised and easy to navigate, so I can find the modules, classes, case studies, mock interviews and mentorship sessions from the same platform.

The Mock Interviews You Have To Clear

After every core module, there is a mock interview. Wherever it is required, I have to clear it before moving ahead. The dashboard also shows when a mock interview isn't required. Some modules are clearly marked “mock interview not required,” so I know which modules have the requirement and which don't.

These mock interviews were useful for me because they helped me identify my weak areas. After completing a module, the mock interview gave me another way to understand where I needed to improve.

The mock interviews are also scheduled inside the platform, along with the mentorship sessions. So I can see when they are scheduled and access them through the same platform where I am doing the rest of my learning.

Career Hub, Job Insights and the resume builder

The dashboard also has a section for career-related features, including Career Hub and Job Insights.

Under Career Hub, I can see the latest job openings available on the platform. The jobs are shown according to my qualifications, so I can look at opportunities that match my profile.

There is also a Job Insights section where I can find more information related to the available opportunities.

There’s another feature that you can find, and it’s called a resume builder. I can create my resume according to the requirements of a particular job. This helps me make changes based on the role I'm applying for and the qualifications it asks for.

So, the career section gives me a place to look at available jobs and prepare my resume based on the requirements of those roles.

The Feature I'd Point to First: Real Business Cases

The feature I like most is the case study approach. We solve real business case problems and start with EDA, followed by feature engineering, model building, and finally giving business insights.

I like this approach because it helped me think about the complete problem. I could take what I had learned and use it while working on a business case, which made the concepts easier to connect with the problem I was solving.

The case studies also helped me improve my problem-solving skills. As I worked on the different stages, I had to understand the data, build the model, and then look at the results from a business perspective. This gave me more practice in applying the concepts I was learning.

Doing this alongside a full-time job

Balancing my full-time job with the program was challenging in the beginning. There was already a lot going on at work, and I also had to keep up with the live classes.

What helped me was creating a weekly study schedule and sticking to it. I also made sure to revise consistently and actively participate in the live sessions and discussions, and refrained from just watching them passively.

I realised that I couldn't depend on finding free time at the end of every day. I had to plan for the learning in advance and make it part of my regular schedule.

There were days when work was busy and keeping up with everything wasn't easy, but having that routine helped me stay on track. I didn't need to completely change my schedule; I just needed to be consistent with the time I had.

So all I did was build my consistency. Once I got used to managing the two together, it became much easier to keep progressing without letting my work commitments get in the way of the program.

My honest Scaler DSML review, as someone still in it

Since I'm still pursuing the program, my Scaler DSML review is based on what I've experienced so far.

The curriculum is well designed, starting from fundamentals like statistics and exploratory data analysis and moving towards machine learning. The real-world case studies also helped me because the program is application-focused.

Overall, it gave me clarity, structure, and confidence in my data science concepts. The assignments, case studies, and mock interviews helped me with problem-solving and identifying my weak areas.

Balancing the program with my full-time job was challenging in the initial days. Setting a weekly study schedule, revising consistently, and actively participating in the live sessions and discussions helped me manage it. Consistency really helped me to improve my schedule.

If I had to suggest something to someone joining the program, I would say be consistent and practice regularly. Don't just watch these lectures. Implement what you learn. Work on case studies seriously. If you follow the structure properly, the program can definitely help you grow.

FAQs

1. What's actually inside the Scaler DSML program?

From what I see on the platform, the program is organised phase-wise, with modules under Core Skills and Curriculum. There are recorded lectures, live classes on alternate days, an assignment after every class, and a business case after each module. There are also mock interviews, in-platform mentorship, problem-solving tracking, and a Career Hub with job-related features.

2. Do you have to clear mock interviews to progress?

For the core modules where a mock interview is required, yes. You have to clear the mock interview before progressing. However, not every module has this requirement - some are specifically marked “mock interview not required.”

3. Can you do this alongside a full-time job?

I do it alongside my full-time role at TCS. It was challenging at first, but creating a weekly study schedule, revising consistently, and actively participating in live classes and discussions helped me manage both. I haven't mentioned a specific number of hours because my experience was more about maintaining a consistent routine than following a fixed daily hour count.

4. What does the placement side of the platform offer?

The platform has a Career Hub where you can find current job openings and filter them according to your qualifications. There is also a Job Insights section and a resume builder that lets you create or tailor your resume according to a particular job's requirements. These are the features I can speak to from my experience; I haven't discussed a placement outcome of my own here.

5. How long does the program take?

The program is 12 months long; it has multiple phases and modules, with recorded lectures, live classes, assignments, case studies, and mock interviews as part of the learning process.
