Forward Deployed Engineer Jobs Grew 1,165%. Here's What That Number Actually Means
You may have noticed Forward Deployed Engineer appearing in more job listings lately, especially at companies building AI products. If you’re seeing the title for the first time, it can be difficult to tell what these jobs actually involve and why so many different companies are hiring for them.
That’s what we’re getting into here. We’ll look into where these jobs are coming from, who is hiring, what the roles pay, and what companies expect from the engineers they hire.
1,165% - Where the Number Comes From
Forward Deployed Engineer job postings grew 1,165% between January-October 2024 and January-October 2025, according to Revealera data analyzed by Bloomberry. The analysis covered around 1,000 FDE postings.
To see how large the job market became, Plank counted 1,333 open FDE roles at 565 companies in September 2026. It estimates that there were roughly 1,000-1,400 jobs using the FDE title worldwide. If similar customer-facing engineering jobs with different titles are included, the number goes around 18,000-25,000.
The hiring continued to rise in 2026. Indeed data reported by Business Insider shows 5,330 FDE postings in April 2026, compared with 643 in April 2025, an increase of 729%.

The 1,000-1,400 estimate covers jobs that use the Forward Deployed Engineer title. When similar customer-embedded engineering roles under other titles are included, Plank estimates 18,000-25,000 roles.
Sometimes, FDE role counts can also be affected when companies use different titles for similar jobs.
Three Measurements, Three Answers
| Source | Figure | Date/period | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bloomberry | 1,165% growth | Jan-Oct 2025 vs Jan-Oct 2024 | Around 1,000 FDE postings |
| Business Insider | 729% growth | April 2025 vs April 2026 | FDE postings |
| Plank | 1,333 live roles | September 2026 | FDE job census |
Now, you might be wondering which companies are actually hiring all these FDEs. So, let’s have a look at what the data says.
What These Jobs Pay
Please note the limitation: only 29% of the postings in Plank’s dataset disclosed pay.
Among those postings, the median disclosed base salary was $193,000. At seed-stage companies, it was $150,000, compared with $243,000 at frontier labs. Geographically, coastal roles came in at about $200,000, compared with $170,000 in the heartland and Sun Belt.
These are US-market figures. They are not directly comparable with Indian salaries because the underlying postings, labour markets, and compensation structures are different.
What the Postings Ask For
Python, TypeScript, AWS, AI agents, LLMs, and RAG all appear in the FDE postings analysed by Bloomberry. If you’re starting with AI engineering, this AI Engineering Roadmap covers the fundamentals before we look at the technical stack in these roles.
The Technical Stack
FDE postings can look surprisingly similar to software engineering roles, especially when you look at the technical skills companies ask for.
Bloomberry’s analysis found:
- Python: 66%
- TypeScript: 35%
- AWS: 32%
- GCP: 22%
- Azure: 18%
- Kubernetes: 14%
- Docker: 12%
Python is the most frequently mentioned language, but the requirements vary across the postings. You’ll see everything from cloud infrastructure and containerisation to the skills needed to build applications.
The AI Layer
Older customer-embedded engineering roles focused largely on building and integrating software. FDE postings now also ask for experience working with AI agents, LLMs, and retrieval systems.
The same analysis found:
- AI agents: 35%
- LLM experience: 31%
- RAG: 12%
You’ll also find OpenAI, Anthropic/Claude, LangChain, and LlamaIndex in the postings. When you put them together, these requirements show how the role is moving into AI implementation alongside the usual engineering work. You still need to build software, but that software may now involve models, agents, or retrieval systems and has to work within the customer's existing technology.
The 68% Nobody Mentions
68% of FDE postings require travel.
That makes being on site a regular part of the job for many FDEs, whether they are working with customer teams, helping deploy the software, or dealing with systems that are difficult to understand from a product specification alone.
For an FDE, travel is tied to the work itself. You may need to be where the customer is to understand how the software is being used, solve problems with their team, and get the solution working in their environment.
Not a Sales Role
The role is customer-facing, so does it involve sales?
Bloomberry found that 70% of FDE postings mention equity, while 8% mention OTE, and 0% of the analysed postings were quota-carrying.
The work can involve customer relationships, expansion, and identifying additional use cases. But the postings analysed by Bloomberry do not show the quota structure you would normally associate with a sales role.

Scaler learners achieved 2.5x salary growth with average post-Scaler CTC reaching ₹23L.
Is This a Role You Can Get Into?
The experience requirements lean toward engineers who already have a few years of experience:
- 0-2 years: 12%
- 3-5 years: 60%
- 6-8 years: 20%
- 9+ years: 8%
The 3-5 year range accounts for 60% of the postings, while only 12% are for engineers with 0-2 years of experience.
The backgrounds are not limited to one type of engineer either. Software engineers account for 45%, followed by solutions engineers and architects at 22%, and data engineers and data scientists at 15%.
So the role is not tied to one particular path into engineering. The experience numbers show that most of these postings are aimed at people who have already built a technical foundation, so freshers are usually not given preference.

What About India?
Glassdoor's India search currently returns 491 results for “Forward Deployed Engineer,” but please keep in mind that it does not mean that there are the same number of FDE openings because the search also picks up duplicate listings and jobs that are related to the title but are not strictly FDE roles.
So yes, you can find roles with direct FDE titles.
Cartesia has a Bengaluru-based Forward Deployed Engineer role focused on working with enterprise customers and getting its agentic voice AI systems into production. The role covers discovery, architecture, implementation, deployment, and enterprise integrations, with compensation listed at ₹70 lakh-₹90 lakh.
Accenture also has Forward Deployed Engineer openings in India. One Hyderabad role asks for at least five years of experience and covers generative AI, Python, agents, RAG, workflow integration, and production-ready enterprise AI applications.
Other current listings include Wipro, Siemens, Zocket, and Elfonze Technologies, with roles ranging from junior positions to internships.
So Is the Boom Real?
Yes. FDE hiring has grown sharply, but the number of jobs is still small compared with software engineering overall.
The 1,165% increase came from a much smaller starting base, which is why the percentage can be so large even though FDE remains a relatively small job category.
You can see the change in the companies hiring for these roles. The title is no longer limited to a few well-known names, with startups, scale-ups, technology companies, and frontier labs now hiring FDEs.
So the boom is real, but FDE is still a specialised part of engineering hiring.
