Topics Covered

The contract on the table is worth $10 million. The client, a global healthcare provider, is ready to sign, but there’s one technical "if." They need your company’s AI platform to work with their on-premise, HIPAA-compliant data servers that haven't been touched since 2015.

The sales team can't answer how. The product team back at HQ says it's not on the roadmap.

Then, you step in. You aren't there to sell; you're there to architect. You sketch out a custom middleware solution, explain the security protocols to their skeptical CTO, and promise to be on-site Monday morning to start the build.

This is why you were hired as a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE).

In 2026, while many traditional software roles are being streamlined by AI, companies hiring forward deployed engineers are seeing an explosive surge. Companies have realized that the "Last Mile" of technology getting complex systems to actually work for a customer is the most valuable skill in the world.

The Hiring Boom: Why FDE Jobs are the "New Gold"

The shift toward "Forward Deployment" is backed by staggering industry data that every job seeker needs to know:

  • The Hiring Surge: As of early 2026, Business Insider reported that the job demand for FDE roles has jumped by 729% YoY, as companies realize they need engineers physically or virtually present to bridge this learning gap.

  • The Implementation Crisis: Research from MIT NANDA reveals that 95% of enterprise AI pilots fail to produce a measurable financial return. This is primarily due to the "learning gap" where tools fail to adapt to complex enterprise workflows.

  • The Palantir Proof: Palantir Technologies, the pioneer of this model, recently reported a staggering 137% growth in U.S. commercial revenue in Q4 2025, proving that "embedding" engineers directly with customers is a powerful way to scale high-complexity software.

Forward Deployed Engineer Jobs in India

India has moved from a "Back-Office Hub" to an "Implementation HQ." with the forward deployed engineer jobs India has seen over the years growing alongside its Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and booming domestic AI scene.

  • The Bangalore-Hyderabad AI Corridor: A significant majority of forward deployed engineer jobs in India are concentrated in Bangalore and Hyderabad. If you're searching specifically for FDE jobs Bangalore, these are two of the first locations to check.

  • The Rise of GCCs: Global retail giants (Walmart, Target) and banks (Goldman Sachs) are hiring FDEs in India to manage the internal deployment of AI tools across their global infrastructure.

  • Domestic AI Startups: Indian pioneers like Sarvam AI and Krutrim are among the companies hiring forward deployed engineers to bridge the gap between their platforms and the unique, messy data environments of Indian enterprises.

How to Land a Forward Deployed Engineer Job

Landing a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) job requires a completely different strategy than a standard "LeetCode and apply" approach.

  • Build an Integration Portfolio: Show that you can work with messy, real-world systems. Projects that integrate disparate APIs, legacy systems, or enterprise databases are more relevant than isolated applications. You can also check out the FDE resumes and portfolios for a deeper breakdown.

  • Prepare for Ambiguity: FDE interviews often involve open-ended deployment problems that test both systems knowledge and client-facing problem-solving. Be ready to explain how you would approach an unclear enterprise problem, from understanding the customer's environment to deploying a workable solution. You can check out the FDE interview guide, which covers this process in more detail.

  • Leverage Referrals: FDEs often represent the company directly with customers, making professional trust important. Build relationships through technical communities and professional networks, and seek referrals where appropriate.

Which Companies Hire Forward Deployed Engineers?

The job title "Forward Deployed Engineer" is not used directly by a lot of companies in India. You can find the role under that exact title at companies like Palantir and OpenAI, but other forward deployed engineer companies often use different titles for similar kinds of jobs. This means you need to check other factors than the FDE title when searching for these roles.

Here’s a quick look at who hires forward deployed engineers, the titles they use, where the jobs are based, and whether you can find opportunities in India. Also see how this market compares with how the AI engineer job market pays in India.

Employer Profiles: How the FDE Role Differs Across Companies

Palantir

Palantir builds software for organisations that use data to make operational decisions, and it is the company that pioneered the Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE) role. Its FDEs work directly with customers to understand difficult problems, then design, build, and deploy solutions using Palantir's platforms, data, and AI.

Palantir uses several FDE titles. Its current careers page lists Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer, and specialised FDSE openings for areas such as US Government, autonomous systems, and other missions. The jobs are posted separately by location and team.

The published JDs ask for strong programming skills, experience with data and software systems, and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. A standard FDSE may build custom applications and work with large-scale data; specialised roles can require experience with edge systems, sensors, robotics, real-time data, or autonomous systems. And travelling to customer sites is also part of several openings.

For now, there is no India-based FDE opening currently. But if you are looking forward to such openings for a Palantir forward deployed engineer, then you can check the Palantir careers page and search by title and location to get a better idea.

OpenAI

OpenAI's FDEs are responsible for taking customer use cases from technical discovery to production deployment. The current San Francisco role covers discovery, scoping, system design, building, and production rollout, with the engineer working directly with customer engineering and domain teams. The work also feeds back into OpenAI's product and model roadmaps.

OpenAI currently uses Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) and Forward Deployed Software Engineer as explicit titles. Its careers search also shows specialized FDE roles, including healthcare and legal positions, as well as FDE roles in Seattle, San Francisco, Tokyo, New York, London, Madrid, Seoul, Singapore, and Sydney, and these places may vary in accordance with the job listings.

The published San Francisco FDSWE role asks for 7+ years of experience, production experience with Python or JavaScript, and experience deploying LLM-based systems, putting it at a more senior level than many standard software engineering openings. You can compare those levels with how SDE levels differ. The role is hybrid, with three days in the office, and can require up to 50% travel. The listed US base salary range is $185K - $325K plus equity, based on the employer posting.

There is currently no FDE or FDSWE opening in India. For the latest roles, you can search OpenAI's careers page using both titles; the location list changes as new FDE teams and specialised deployments are added.

Google Cloud

Google Cloud has a Forward Deployed Engineer role specifically focused on generative AI. Its current Generative AI Forward Deployed Engineer, Google Cloud opening lets candidates choose between Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. The job asks for 8 years of experience in cloud computing or a technical customer-facing role, along with experience building enterprise AI pipelines using vector databases and RAG-like architectures. It also asks for experience taking production AI solutions from conception to launch, architecting them on Google Cloud, and leading technical discovery with customers.

The JD calls for engineers who can work through the customer's technical environment, deal with data and integration problems, and build and debug the systems needed to get an AI solution into production. That makes the role much closer to an FDE than a standard software engineering position.

Google also uses the FDE title alongside Customer Engineer. Its current AI Outcome Customer Engineer, FDE, Google Cloud role is listed in Bangalore and Mumbai and asks for 7 years of experience troubleshooting technical issues for customers or partners, leading technical delivery, debugging systems, reading code, and working with enterprise integrations, cloud infrastructure, or AI/ML deployments.

So if you are searching for FDE jobs Bangalore or elsewhere in India, then you can definitely look into Google Cloud's Customer Engineer titles in the search.

Anthropic

Anthropic uses the Forward Deployed Engineer title within its Applied AI organization. Its current careers listings show FDE openings in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Munich, and Paris.

The role focuses on taking Anthropic's AI capabilities into real customer environments, with engineers working on the technical problems involved in deploying and integrating those systems. The FDE title is used directly here, so it is one of the companies where searching for “Forward Deployed Engineer” gives a clear signal rather than requiring candidates to work through several different job titles.

Anthropic's current FDE listings do not include an opening in India. The company does have other Applied AI positions in India, so you can check them out and stay updated through their careers page.

AWS

When you're looking for FDE roles at AWS, the job may not always be posted under the Forward Deployed Engineer title. In India, AWS uses Solutions Architect for some roles that involve a similar forward deployed engineer job description.

A current Solutions Architect opening in Karnataka asks the engineer to work with strategic enterprise customers from discovery and scoping through architecture and co-building. The role involves building proofs of concept and production solutions using Amazon Bedrock and AgentCore, along with RAG pipelines, multi-agent systems, and MCP servers. It also asks for production programming experience, including Python.

AWS also lists Solutions Architect roles across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other locations in India, although the work varies by team. Some roles focus more on cloud architecture and technical advice, while others involve much more hands-on development and deployment.

The Consultancies: PwC, Deloitte and Accenture

You can also look into consulting firms such as PwC, Deloitte, and Accenture when you're searching for FDE-related roles in India. In Scaler's India AI Workforce Report 2026, consulting outcomes nearly doubled from 3.1% at entry to 5.65% of overall professional outcomes. You may find these openings around Palantir Foundry, where engineers work with enterprise clients to build, customize, and deploy solutions.

At Accenture, you can currently find Forward Deployed Engineer roles in India, including a Palantir-focused position. The work involves understanding client needs, designing the solution, and taking it through implementation. The JD also looks for experience with Python, PySpark, and TypeScript/React, along with enterprise application and data engineering.

PwC Acceleration Centers has also hired for Palantir Forward Deployed Engineer roles in Bangalore. There are currently no active postings, but you can stay updated through their career page.

With Deloitte, you may come across Palantir Foundry engineering roles in Bangalore and not a direct FDE opening. So when you check these companies, look at both the job title and the JD. A role may not say FDE, but the work can still involve the same customer-facing development, implementation, and deployment that you're looking for.

Also remember that these positions are with the consulting firms and not Palantir itself. You would join Accenture, PwC, or Deloitte and work on Palantir-based solutions for their clients.

Indian AI startups: Sarvam AI and others

FDE roles are not limited to large tech companies and consulting firms. Sarvam AI is currently hiring for FDE jobs in Bangalore.

In this role, you'll work directly with enterprise clients, taking an engagement from scoping the solution to getting it into production. You could be building integration scripts, configuring the platform, debugging issues across the stack, or deploying AI systems into the customer's environment. The JD asks for strong AI fundamentals across LLMs, agents, RAG, tool use, and structured outputs, along with strong Python and the ability to work across backend, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure. Sarvam prefers 4+ years of experience, but the JD puts more weight on your experience and your ability to work through ambiguous problems. If you’re new to these skills, then an AI Engineer roadmap can help you with it.

So, when you're checking forward deployed engineer jobs India has, then Sarvam is one place where you can search for the FDE title directly.

Global Capability Centres

Global Capability Centres such as Walmart, Target, and Goldman Sachs are hiring engineers for AI and enterprise technology work in India. But you may not find these jobs under the Forward Deployed Engineer title. They are more likely to appear as AI Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Software Engineer, or Solutions Architect. So, you can compare them with some of the highest-paying IT jobs in India when you're evaluating where to build your next role.

At Target, for example, Bangalore openings include Sr AI Engineer, Lead AI Engineer, and Lead Fullstack Engineer - Advanced AI. These roles involve building AI applications and working with product, engineering, and business teams to turn business requirements into working systems.

Walmart Global Tech also hires software engineers to build and deploy GenAI systems using LLMs, RAG, and agentic frameworks.

At Goldman Sachs, you will find engineering roles in software, cloud, data, and machine learning, with major teams in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

So, when you're searching these companies, look beyond the FDE title. Pay attention to JDs that ask you to understand a business problem, design a solution, build it, and take it into production. Those are the parts of the role that are closest to FDE work.

The Job Title Problem: What to Search for Instead of "FDE"

You may already have noticed a pattern in the companies above: the work can look like FDE work even when Forward Deployed Engineer is nowhere in the title. This is also why you should understand the wider software engineer career path before comparing these roles. Google Cloud, for example, has an AI Outcome Customer Engineer, FDE role in India, while AWS uses Solutions Architect for some hands-on customer deployment work.

Anthropic keeps Forward Deployed Engineer as a separate title from its Applied AI Engineer roles. The easiest way to tell the difference is to ignore the title for a moment and go through JDs to find a similar forward deployed engineer job description. Look for a combination of customer discovery, system design, hands-on development, integration, deployment, production, and ownership.

One or two of these can appear in a normal engineering or architecture role. When most of them appear in the same JD, then it means that you're getting much closer to the FDE model.

Title you'll seeCompany examplesIs it the same job? What differs
Customer EngineerGoogle CloudSometimesYou may be responsible for customer discovery, architecture, debugging, and technical delivery. At Google, the FDE version goes further into code-level debugging, enterprise integrations, and owning delivery from design through deployment.
Solutions EngineerEnterprise software companiesOften adjacentThe role can lean more toward technical discovery, demos, proofs of concept, and solution design. Check whether you also own the actual build and production deployment.
Solutions ArchitectAWS, Google CloudSometimesSome roles focus mainly on architecture and technical guidance. Others include hands-on prototyping, coding, and customer deployment. The AWS GenAI role above is a good example of the latter.
Delivery / Implementation EngineerConsulting firmsSometimesYou are more likely to find requirements gathering, integration, implementation, and production rollout. The key question is whether you're also designing and building the solution.
Foundry ConsultantPalantir ecosystemRelated, but not identicalThe work centres on implementing Palantir Foundry for a customer. It can involve configuration, data pipelines, and application development, but the role may have less engineering ownership than a Palantir FDE.
Applied AI EngineerAnthropic and AI companiesNot automaticallyYou may build and deploy production AI systems, but the role can be product or platform focused. Anthropic lists Applied AI Engineer separately from its FDE roles, so the title alone isn't enough.

How to Check Whether a Company is Still Hiring FDEs

You can check whether a forward deployed engineer companies opening in about 90 seconds:

First 20 seconds: Open the company's careers page and search for Forward Deployed Engineer and Forward Deployed Software Engineer. Also check the location at the same time.

Next 25 seconds: Search the alternate titles used by that company. For Google, try Customer Engineer and AI Customer Engineer. For AWS, try Solutions Architect. For Palantir, search the different Forward Deployed categories rather than one generic FDE query. The title list you've built from this article gives you the starting point.

Next 30 seconds: Open the JD and go through the responsibilities. You need to look for combination such as: customer-facing problem solving, technical discovery, architecture, coding, integration, and production deployment. Please keep this in mind, because roles mentioning only AI or customers won’t directly become FDE centric roles.

Last 15 seconds: Check that the job is still on the employer's careers site, the location matches what you need, and the application link works. If you found it on LinkedIn, Indeed, or another aggregator first, use that listing to find the job, then verify it on the company's own site before you rely on it.

If you’re on the look, then the best thing to do here is to create a Job Alert. Once you've identified the titles a company actually uses, set alerts for those titles along with the already set FDE alerts. And when you find a fitting role, then you check how to get a job in IT.

FAQs

Which companies hire forward deployed engineers?

Companies hiring or advertising FDE roles include Palantir, OpenAI, Google Cloud, Anthropic, AWS, Accenture, and Sarvam AI, while consulting firms and GCCs often use related titles. The employer list changes quickly, so check the table and its verification date before treating any company as currently hiring.

Are there forward deployed engineer jobs in India?

Yes. India has current FDE openings at Google Cloud, Accenture, and Sarvam AI, with Bangalore, Mumbai, and Pune appearing in current listings. You will also find similar work under Customer Engineer, Solutions Architect, and other titles at large tech companies and GCCs. At the check date, frontier-lab FDE listings from OpenAI and Anthropic were outside India.

What is a forward deployed engineer called at other companies?

You may see the same type of customer-facing deployment work under titles such as Customer Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Solutions Architect, Delivery Engineer, Implementation Engineer, or Foundry Consultant. Applied AI Engineer can overlap too, but it is not automatically an FDE role. Read the JD to see how much customer work, coding, and deployment ownership it includes.

Do FDE jobs require a lot of travel?

Yes. Travel can be a significant part of FDE work because you may need to work directly with customers on-site. OpenAI's current San Francisco FDE posting states that travel of up to 50% is required. Its FDSWE and specialised FDE postings also mention travel, so check the individual JD rather than assuming every FDE role has the same travel requirement.

Can I move into an FDE role from backend development?

Yes. Backend development is a strong starting point because FDE roles still require solid programming, system design, APIs, data work, and production engineering. To make the move, build experience solving integration problems, deploying systems, working with customers, and explaining technical decisions clearly. Palantir and OpenAI both ask for strong engineering skills alongside customer-facing delivery.

Is it possible to get an FDE job in India for a US-based company?

Yes, when a US-based company creates an India-based FDE opening. Google Cloud currently has FDE roles in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Pune, for example. But a US listing does not automatically let you work from India; you need an India-based role and must meet its location and work-authorization requirements. Always check the employer's careers page for the actual location.
