Thinking about becoming a Python developer or already working with Python and wondering how much you can earn in India? This article breaks down the Python developer salary in India in 2026, including how pay changes with experience, how salaries differ by role, and which cities report higher salaries. You’ll also find out how CTC, base salary, and in-hand pay differ, why salary websites often show different numbers, and what can affect your Python salary as you progress.

What Is The Average Python Developer Salary in India?

The average Python developer salary in India is ₹3,07,279 per year, based on 77 salaries reported on Indeed India and updated on 20 February 2026. But when we compared the salary figures for different roles where Python is usually used, we found a 3.95× difference in average salaries between the lowest- and highest-paying roles. Let’s look at these figures to see how salaries vary by role.

Python Developer Salary by Experience: Fresher to 6+ years

The Python developer salary for freshers can vary quite a bit, and the increase isn't uniform as you gain experience. Salary growth tends to be slower in the first few years and becomes more noticeable as you move into more experienced roles. Have a look at this table:

ExperienceSalary rangeReported salaries
0-1 year₹3.1-3.4 LPA556
1-3 years₹4.5-4.9 LPA10.5k
3-6 years₹7.8-8.7 LPA6.3k

Source: AmbitionBox, checked in September 2026.

From the table, you can see the pattern of the progression. The salary range moves up gradually from 0-1 year to 1-3 years, while the 3-6 year band shows a much bigger increase. The number of reported salaries is also shown for each band, so you can see the amount of salary data behind each range.

You have seen the ranges up to 6 years, but what about after that? For the 7-9 years experience band, Glassdoor reports a ₹6-15 LPA range based on around 3.6k reported salaries. You might notice that this range looks a bit different from the AmbitionBox figures above. We’ll explain why these ranges can differ in a later section, but for now, keep in mind that the difference is linked to the sample size and the salary data reported on each platform.

If you're using your years of experience to understand where your salary could fall, remember that these years also roughly correspond to the engineering level you're working at. As you move to higher levels, the responsibilities and pay change too. You can see how this works in how software engineering levels map to pay.

The Bigger Gap Nobody Shows You: Salary by Python Role Type

You might find the term “Python developer” used for different kinds of jobs, and the salary can look quite different depending on the role. To compare these roles, we looked at salary figures from Indeed India for all five roles.

Python-related roleAverage annual salaryReported salariesUpdated On
Python developer₹3,07,2797720 February 2026
Backend developer₹ 3,42,93212420 May 2026
Automation engineer₹6,31,84311930 July 2026
Data analyst₹6,33,57967730 August 2026
Machine learning engineer₹12,13,3275619 August 2026

Note: These figures are from Indeed India career pages on 8th September 2026. Each figure is based on a different number of reported salaries, so the sample size varies by role. The Python developer and machine learning engineer figures have fewer reported salaries than the other roles in the table.

Python backend engineer

While searching for Python developer jobs, backend development is one of the main roles you'll come across. Python is used with frameworks such as Django, Flask, and FastAPI to build APIs and server-side applications. You’ll also see skills like SQL, REST APIs, Git, and databases listed alongside Python. The salary figure for backend developers is close to the Python developer figure in the table. This is also why backend development is often the role people have in mind when they search for Python developer jobs.

Data analyst who uses Python

Data analysts use Python to work with datasets, but the role also involves SQL, Excel, BI tools, pandas, and NumPy. You might use these skills to clean data, find patterns, create reports, and answer business questions. Hence, if you’re going ahead with data analytics, then you should also be ready to combine Python with data analysis skills and other tools.

Also check out data analyst pay in more detail.

ML engineer

Machine learning roles use Python along with mathematics, statistics, machine learning algorithms, model evaluation, and tools for training and deploying models. The role also involves working with models and understanding how they perform on real data.

The salary figure is the highest in the table, but the number of reported salaries is smaller at 56. So, it’s best to see this figure more as an estimate than an established base. You can read more about what machine learning engineers earn in India.

Automation / QA engineer

Automation and QA engineers use Python to test software and automate tasks that would otherwise need to be done manually. You’ll work with automated tests, API testing, bug reproduction, and CI pipelines as part of the role. The salary figure falls between the backend and data analyst figures in the table. If you enjoy coding and testing software, automation and QA can be another role where you can use Python.

CTC vs Base Salary Vs In-hand: What You'll Actually Be Paid

When you're new to a role and start discussing salaries and packages, you might find that companies present their offers in very different ways. This can get especially confusing when the package starts getting bigger, because the number you see in the offer letter isn't always the amount you'll receive in your bank account. Let's break down what those numbers actually mean.

For example, an ₹8 LPA CTC could be structured like this:

ComponentIllustrative annual amount
Basic salary₹3,60,000
HRA₹1,44,000
Other allowances₹1,20,000
Employer PF₹43,200
Gratuity₹17,300
Variable pay₹75,500
Joining bonus₹40,000
Total CTC₹8,00,000

Note: These are rounded figures used to explain how an ₹8 LPA package can be structured. They are not sourced salary figures, and an actual offer can have a different breakup.

Now, the first thing you might notice is that ₹8 lakh divided by 12 is about ₹66,667 per month, but that doesn't mean ₹66,667 will be credited to your bank account. The CTC includes components such as employer PF and gratuity that aren't part of your monthly take-home.

In this example, the recurring salary components add up to ₹6,24,000 a year, or ₹52,000 a month, before employee-side deductions. The ₹43,200 employer PF and ₹17,300 gratuity are part of the ₹8 lakh CTC but aren't paid to you as monthly salary. The ₹40,000 joining bonus is also a one-time payment, while the ₹75,500 variable pay may depend on performance.

Your ₹52,000 monthly gross salary can then have deductions such as employee PF, professional tax, and TDS. So the amount that finally reaches your bank account will be lower than ₹52,000. The exact in-hand amount depends on your PF contribution, tax regime, professional tax, and other deductions applicable to you.

You should keep in mind the recurring salary versus the first-year CTC. In this example, the ₹40,000 joining bonus increases the first-year CTC to ₹8 lakh, but you won't receive another ₹40,000 every year. Some companies also include a clawback clause, which can require you to repay some or all of the joining bonus if you leave before a specified period.

So, when you're comparing Python job offers, be very careful with what your offer includes. Check the fixed salary, variable pay, employer contributions, joining bonus, and expected monthly in-hand separately. This way, you’ll be able to make a better decision in line with what you want to go ahead with.

Why the Salary Sites Disagree With Each Other

You can search for the same Python role on four salary websites and come away with four very different numbers. That does not automatically mean one source is wrong. Salary sites collect different kinds of data, use different job categories, and have different sample sizes and update cycles. This is also why the salary ranges were so different when we had taken year-wise salary bands in the earlier section. Check this out:

SourceWhat it reportsSampleDate
AmbitionBox₹7 lakh - ₹7.7 lakh per year17,200 salaries7 September 2026
Glassdoor India₹3 Lakh - ₹5 lakh3,600 Salaries7 September 2026
Indeed India₹3,07,297 average base salary79 salaries20 February 2026
PayScale₹518,3787,251 profiles14 July 2026

There are a few reasons for these differences:

Self-Reporting Bias

Most salary platforms depend partly on people submitting their own compensation data. The people who report a salary are not necessarily a perfect representation of everyone working in that role. Someone may submit after a promotion, when changing jobs, or simply because they want to share the number. The timing and type of submissions can influence the figure you see.

Sharpen Your Fundamentals with Free Learning

Different Title Buckets

The sites may not even be measuring exactly the same job. PayScale's figure, for example, is for “Software Developer with Python skills”, not specifically “Python Developer.” A broader or different title can include people doing different work, which naturally produces a different salary distribution.

CTC Vs Base Salary

A salary figure is difficult to compare if you don't know what it includes. One source may report base salary, another may report total pay or CTC, and another may not make the distinction clear. An ₹8 lakh CTC, for instance, can include employer PF, gratuity, variable pay, and bonuses that don't appear as monthly cash in your bank account.

Sample Size and Staleness

The sources also cite salary data from various years, so this can have an impact on the numbers they give. The older data may be representative of a different hiring market, and the newer data may be more reflective of recent changes in pay. So even when two sites cover the same Python role, their salary estimates may not line up.

How to read any salary page

Before using a salary figure to judge an offer, check four things:

  1. What role or title is being measured?
  2. Is the figure base salary, total pay, or CTC?
  3. How many salaries or profiles does it represent?
  4. When was the data last updated?

If a salary page doesn't tell you these things, then it's best to treat its number as a rough reference, and not an actual figure.

What Affects Your Python Developer Salary

Python is just a part of your compensation. The Python salary in India depends significantly on the company you work for, the city you work in, and the type of work you do. The salary data also suggests that role and employer can have a bigger effect than simply adding another year of experience.

Company type

Where you work can have a noticeable effect on your salary. Service companies, product companies, startups, and GCCs operate with different pay structures and hiring needs, so the same Python experience can attract different offers.

The biggest shift often comes when someone moves from a service company to a product company. Scaler's career transition assessment found a 150% median salary hike after upskilling and transitioning, which shows how a move to a different kind of role or employer can influence overall pay.

That does not mean every product-company move will produce the same increase. Your experience level, role, location, and the offer itself still affect the final outcome.

City

Location also shows up in salary data, although city comparisons need to be read carefully. Indeed's city-level figures place Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and the NCR region among the locations with reported Python salaries, while tier-2 cities generally sit lower.

There is an interesting wrinkle in the same dataset: Indeed's national average is lower than every city figure it lists. That does not mean the national number is wrong. It is likely a sampling effect caused by the mix of salaries included in the national and city-level datasets.

The Domain Layered on Python

Python salaries can vary significantly depending on the type of work you're doing. Backend development in general is often lower, with more specialized roles like machine learning and data engineering offering better salaries. These roles also require skills specific to their domain, such as model building, statistics, or data pipelines.

SQL, Cloud and the Skills That Price In

Some complementary skills can influence the kinds of Python roles and salary bands you can access. SQL is particularly valuable in data-focused roles, while cloud skills become more relevant in backend, data engineering and production environments. FAQs

What is the average Python developer salary in India?

Indeed India reports an average base salary of ₹3,07,279 per year for Python developers, based on 77 reported salaries, updated on 20 February 2026. Salary varies by role, and specialised Python-related roles can command significantly higher pay.

What is a Python developer's salary for freshers?

According to Glassdoor, Python developers with 0-1 years of experience in India can earn around ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh per year. Your actual salary can vary based on the company, location, role, and skills.

What is the Python developer salary per month?

Monthly in-hand pay cannot be calculated by simply dividing annual CTC by 12. CTC can include employer PF, gratuity, variable pay, and bonuses that don't reach your bank account each month. For a realistic monthly figure, look at your gross salary and subtract applicable deductions such as PF, professional tax, and TDS.

Do Python developers earn more than Java developers in India?

There isn't enough same-source data in this brief to make a reliable Python vs Java salary ranking. More importantly, the programming language alone is not a strong salary benchmark. Role, company type, experience, and specialisation can create larger differences in pay than whether the role uses Python or Java.

How much does a Python developer with 5 years' experience earn?

Glassdoor's data shows that Python developer salaries increase with experience, with the 4-6 year range at ₹5 lakh-₹10 lakh per year. A Python developer with around five years of experience can therefore expect a salary within this range, depending on their role, company, and location.

Which city pays Python developers the most in India?

According to Indeed, Pune has the highest reported Python developer salary at ₹9,29,488 per year, followed by Hyderabad at ₹9,02,045 and Noida at ₹8,30,411. Your actual salary will depend on factors such as your experience, role, and the company you join.

Does learning Python alone increase your salary?

Learning Python can open up more roles, but the language itself does not determine your salary. Pay tends to reflect the domain you apply Python to, such as backend development, data, machine learning, or infrastructure, along with your experience and employer. Building expertise beyond the language is what expands your earning potential.
