Want to work as a Forward Deployed Engineer at Anthropic? You can find the current openings, understand what Anthropic expects from people applying for the role, and see what the hiring process looks like before you decide where to apply. What you do need to keep in mind is the location because the role is currently open in the US and Europe, while Anthropic has different applied AI positions available in India.
So if you’re applying from India, you’ll find the FDE openings and the India-based alternatives covered here, along with the differences between them.
Does Anthropic Hire Forward Deployed Engineers and Where?
Yes. As of 13 September 2026, Anthropic has Forward Deployed Engineer openings in New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Munich, and Paris. The US posting covers New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle, while separate postings are listed for Munich and Paris.
Anthropic has not posted a Forward Deployed Engineer role in Bengaluru. The listings there include roles such as Applied AI Architect, a separate position that we’ll examine later in the article.
This article is based on Anthropic’s public job postings and careers information and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic.
What Does an Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer Do
Anthropic’s Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with customers to build and deploy AI applications around Claude. The role combines software engineering with customer discovery and deployment work, with FDEs working inside customer systems, collaborating with customer teams, and working closely with Anthropic’s Post-Sales, Product, and Engineering teams.
The Work: As the Job Description Describes It
As an anthropic forward deployed engineer, you will be brought into a customer’s workflow and asked to turn a business requirement into a working AI application. Anthropic says FDEs will build production applications with Claude within customer systems, so you will need to understand the workflow you are working with, identify where Claude can add value, and build the application around the customer’s existing systems. You’ll have to work closely with the customer’s technical teams and with Anthropic’s Product, Engineering, and Post-Sales teams.
That application can include the infrastructure and components needed to make Claude work within the workflow. Anthropic specifically names MCP servers, sub-agents, and agent skills as technical artifacts FDEs may build for production use. If the application needs Claude to work with external tools or data, for example, MCP can provide that connection. So, it’s also best to understand how MCP connects models to real systems.
The next part of the job is getting the application into the customer’s environment and making it work there. Anthropic describes this as “white glove deployment support” and expects FDEs to maintain long-term customer relationships while looking for additional ways Claude can be deployed.
Working across these deployments will also give you patterns that can be applied to future customers. Anthropic expects FDEs to identify and codify those patterns and share them with Product and Engineering. The technical requirements suggest that you will need production experience with LLMs, including prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale, as well as strong Python and production application development skills. You can use a prompt engineering roadmap to get started.

Anthropic’s current US FDE listing requires 4+ years of experience in a technical, customer-facing role, such as Forward Deployed Engineering, or software engineering with consulting experience.
The technical requirements include production LLM experience across advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale, along with strong Python skills and experience shipping production applications. TypeScript or Java is a plus.
Anthropic also looks for high agency in ambiguous situations, strong collaboration across teams, and the ability to conduct customer discovery and explain technical concepts to different stakeholders. Experience with enterprise IT systems, AI deployment patterns, or a specific enterprise vertical is an additional advantage.
This is a mid-to-senior role. The Munich position goes further and requires 8+ years of technical, customer-facing experience, along with experience building or deploying an LLM application in an enterprise production environment.
The Requirement Most People Underestimate
The “Production experience with LLMs” requirement means an application that has been built and deployed. Anthropic’s Munich application form makes this especially explicit: it asks whether you have built or deployed an LLM application in an enterprise production environment and whether you have been embedded with an enterprise customer to build an LLM application that went live. If you’re still learning LLMs from scratch, this LLM roadmap can help you build that foundation.
That experience should be visible on your CV through the work itself. Name the LLM application, the workflow it supported, the systems it integrated with, the evaluation approach, and what you handled after deployment. If you built an agent, explain the production task it performed and how its results were evaluated and improved.
What Anthropic Publishes About Salary
The current US posting lists an Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer salary of $280,000-$320,000 USD annually for roles in New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle.
The Munich FDE posting does not publish a salary range.
There is currently no published Anthropic FDE salary for India either. Anthropic’s current India openings include Applied AI Architect roles in Bengaluru, but no FDE position. For a more detailed comparison, you can look into AI engineer salaries in India.
How to Apply & What Candidates Say About the Process
If you’re applying for the anthropic fde role, you’ll want to know what the interview actually involves before you start preparing. You can use the available information about Anthropic’s own interview guidelines and take a look at the exercises candidates have reported to focus on your preparation.
What Anthropic Publishes About Interviewing
Anthropic does not publish a separate FDE interview sequence. Its careers page says technical interviews are conducted over Google Meet and use live coding tools such as Colab and CodeSignal. You can look things up during the interview, but you’re still expected to know basic syntax and standard libraries well enough to avoid spending the session searching for them.
The forward deployed engineer anthropic interview also covers your experience and motivation, with time set aside for your questions. Candidates can use Claude or other AI tools during the application process where appropriate, which the company says helps it learn more about your own perspective, skills, and experience.
What Candidates Report
Let’s check what people have to say about their experience with forward deployed engineer anthropic interview.
Glassdoor, March 18, 2026: An anonymous candidate who interviewed at Anthropic in March reported they had to go through six stages: recruiter screen, hiring-manager discussion about motivation and experience, an agents coding screen, a roleplay/ML system-design exercise with an imaginary client, Python bug fixing in a notebook, and a culture-fit/behavioural round. The candidate said the agents exercise involved modifying an existing agent loop to add tool calls and discussing optimisation.
Reddit, May 2026: A commenter who said they had interviewed with Anthropic described FDE as a software-engineering role with a strong post-sales component. They said interview loops can combine live exercises and take-home work, with candidates expected to handle edge cases and explain their technical and design decisions.
Another commenter said they had participated in FDE hiring at a foundation-model company and described practical assessments involving API integration, RAG debugging, evaluations, and tool-calling. For their own FDE interviews, they said candidates were expected to build a real-world solution, present the working system and architecture, and discuss design patterns and trade-offs. This is FDE hiring experience at another foundation-model company, not a report of Anthropic's own interview loop.
As you can see, these reports don’t mention one standard procedure. They cover everything from an agents coding exercise and Python debugging to client scenarios, product architecture, and behavioural discussions.
How to Prepare
There are four areas that you should work on before the forward deployed engineer anthropic interview:
-
Build an LLM application end to end: Take one project from the initial problem through development and deployment. Be ready to explain how you used the model, what went wrong, and what you changed before putting it into production.
-
Write evaluations for it: Decide what the application should get right, create examples to test it, and track where it fails. For an agent, check whether it chooses the right tool, completes the task, and handles failure cases properly.
-
Explain a deployment to a non-technical stakeholder: Start with the problem the application was solving, then explain what you built, where it fits into the workflow, and what happened after deployment. Keep the explanation focused on the problem and the result, rather than walking through the code.
-
Know what the model cannot do: Be specific about where it produced unreliable results and what you did about them. You might have added human review, changed the workflow, adjusted the prompt, or decided that the model was not suitable for a particular task.
And then you can continue practicing with these FDE Interview Questions.
What Can You Apply for in India?
Anthropic's India Presence
Anthropic has an operating presence in India now. The company officially opened its Bengaluru office in February 2026 and said the office would focus on hiring local talent across a wide range of roles. Its India team is working with enterprises, digital-native companies, and startups to help them design, build, and scale Claude-powered solutions.
The current careers page shows Applied AI Architect roles in Bengaluru, including an Applied AI Architect and an Applied AI Architect, Partnerships. The same page currently lists FDE roles in New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Munich, and Paris, with no forward deployed engineer jobs position based in India.

The Applied AI Architect Route
The anthropic applied ai architect in Bengaluru is the closest current India-based role to the customer-facing applied AI work described in the FDE listing, but please keep in mind that it’s a different job, and not a renamed FDE position. Anthropic describes it as a pre-sales architect role: you will advise large enterprises across India and APAC, help them understand how Claude can fit their technology stack, guide technical discovery, develop evaluations, and work through deployment with Sales, Product, and Engineering.
The experience profile is also different. The Bengaluru posting asks for 10+ years in technical customer-facing roles such as Solutions Architect, Sales Engineer, or Technical Account Manager, plus enterprise experience in India or APAC. Python, scalable cloud architecture, enterprise integration, and familiarity with LLM frameworks or tools are part of the technical profile.
But the work does overlap with FDE in some places, since both roles involve enterprise customers, LLM applications, evaluations, technical architecture, and getting AI into real workflows. The difference is mainly about which area of the customer journey each is handling. The Bengaluru Architect is explicitly positioned around technical advisory and pre-sales, while the FDE listing centers on building production applications inside customer environments.
Applying to a US or EU Role from India
You can apply for a US or European FDE role from India, but you need to be prepared for the location and immigration requirements attached to that posting. Visa and green-card sponsorship are available for eligible roles, but sponsorship does not make an office-based FDE position remote from India.
The current FDE postings are tied to specific offices, and the applications ask about office attendance and relocation. The US application asks whether you are open to relocation. If you are considering the Munich role, you also need to meet its native German and fluent English requirements and be prepared for 25 - 50% travel to customer sites.
So, it’s always best to check the location, language, travel, and sponsorship requirements on the specific posting before you apply. The sponsorship policy applies only to eligible roles and candidates, so you should not assume that an overseas FDE opening will have the same requirements as another one.
What to Build in the Meantime
While you wait for an FDE opening in India, you can work on an LLM application that covers the same kind of production work. Build around a specific use case, connect the model to the data or APIs it needs, evaluate its performance, and deploy it.
A document-search application could use retrieval over a defined document set. An agent could call APIs or other tools to complete a task. Whichever direction you choose, test the application with representative inputs and fix the failures you find rather than stopping once the first version works.
Anthropic’s February 2026 announcement about its Bengaluru office describes teams in India building applications, modernizing systems, and shipping production software with Claude. There is currently no FDE opening in Bengaluru, but these are the areas of work you can build experience in from India.
